Eddie hadn't felt this alive in a while. He felt like a weight had been lifted off of him that was constantly weighing him down and keep him from reaching his full potential. He'd moved here to get away from his mother's new boyfriend, he'd moved here to reconnect with his brothers. There were memories on the old farm that he just didn't want to contend with anymore, and here he was supposed to be starting over. But the memories bogged him down. Feeling like he'd been missing something. He just went through the motion day after day and never seemed to get anywhere new. Today...today finally felt different though. Howie had loaded the horses up that morning and taken them down to the docks for the start of the parade, and he'd gone to the vet to fill his saddle bags with a few different things. He was riding to represent the vet clinic, as well as provide any needed support for the animals and their people that was needed. His brother had loaded up his most docile horse for the parade, Shiner, and they were going to have a jolly old time. As he parked the truck near the trailer though, he heard a rather high pitched squeal and the sound of metal shaking. That...didn't sound like just Shiner. Warily, he jumped out of the truck and walked to the back of the trailer, where he was met with the site of not only Shiner but his yearling filly as well, Marmaduke. His brother was no where to be seen to ask, probably already having a hell of a time trying to deal with the two horses he had brought. He blinked, and scratched the back of his head. How exactly was he going to provide assistance if he was dealing with the filly as well? There was a reason she was named Marmaduke. He came around the side of the trailer, nearly running into Paige as she was getting her horse ready. He took a few steps back, giving her a wide berth. He knew she was one of Howie's students, whom even Howie trusted around his project horses, and she'd been fairly good friends with Rick before he moved to Canada with his boyfriend. He himself had never really gotten the chance to talk with her, or interact, or really look at her-and perhaps it was the summer sea spray in the air, but he couldn't help but think that she was looking rather cute in that polo and all of her freckles. Howie went for girls that were all made up, and Eddie was the opposite. He blushed, running his fingers through his hair. "Hey Paige, have you seen Howie around? I have no idea why he would bring Marmaduke...." The filly squealed again, before a loud snap and crash came from inside the trailer. Darting around to the back of it again, he managed to get there just in time for Marmaduke to leap out of the trailer at him, halter and tie flapping. Wide eyed, he did his best to step to the side, but even he wasn't fast enough. He was just fast enough to grab the end of the lead rope and she jerked him, pulling him from his feet with his already sore shoulder from her head smacking into it, as she ran toward the dock. "Paige!" He yelped, screaming the only name he knew was within hearing distance, and tried to dig his heels in...but it was to no avail. With all the trailers there, they had ended up parking fairly close to the pier and the little filly was taking Eddie for a spin. And then a flying leap, when she realized that the ground was moving beneath her as they actually got onto the wood boards of the pier...and with a loud splash, she finally quit running.
Eddie was soaked almost instantly, as he grabbed onto her mane as she splashed about, trying to at least get on her back side so that he would be out of the way of her hooves. She tried to buck as she felt him against her back, but it didn't work so well when she was already in the water. Snorting, she kept her head above water and swam to the shore, climbing out onto the sandy bank. Eddie walked alongside her, and looked at her, looked to himself, covered in seaweed, and back to the filly.
"MARMADUUUKE!"

Marmaduke looked rather pleased with herself as she stood there a moment, then decided to shake herself off, spraying both Paige and Eddie with water. He groaned, but couldn't help but laugh at the look Paige was giving him. "It's alright, luckily I have a change of clothes in my truck, just in case." He shrugged; it was the life of a vet assistant: always prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So he had brought an extra pair of clothes. He still had no fathomable idea why his brother would have brought Marmaduke along, especially when there was so much going on. She could've hurt someone, or could've gotten hurt herself. Luckily, as he bent down to check her over, he found nothing wrong with her. Shiner whickered from the trailer, and Marmaduke responded with a very low whinny, telling her parent she was sorry. She looked to Eddie and nuzzled his shirt...wiping snot all over it. He groaned again...looking over to Paige. "You know, it's probably not something you want to hear from someone who looks like the swamp monster right now, but...you look really pretty." He blushed, not entirely believing he had just said that, and hurriedly walked Marmaduke back to his car. He peeled his wet shirt off and playfully threw it at Marmaduke. It landed on her head and he laughed. Standing there shirtless a moment, he reached into his car and grabbed the other polo he had and the pair of pants. He put the wet polo on his trunk, hoping by the time they got back it would be dry. He turned toward the trailer and started back toward Paige, his wet skin gleaming slightly in the sunlight. He didn't have a six pack, but he wasn't without completely. "I know you're trying to get your horse ready, but could you hold her while I change?" He didn't even think twice about the fact that he was standing in front of her with a naked torso and how it might make her feel uncomfortable, he was just sort of rolling with the punches.

Before they could take another step, Marmaduke began shaking the sea water from her coat, splashing Paige and Eddie in the process. Paige cringed a little and instinctively tried to cover her face, but it was really no help. Paige giggled as she called out, “Marmaduke, no!” She wasn’t mad, not by a long shot. The whole situation was just too hilarious to be mad, even if it was a huge inconvenience. Paige was happy to hear that Eddie had a change of clothes. Hers would dry shortly in the summer heat, but she was afraid there was no helping Eddie’s ocean-soaked attire. Marmaduke’s whinny back to Shiner’s whickering was enough to make Paige giggle again, just thinking about how ridiculous the whole situation was. However, the most surprising thing to happen was what came out of Eddie’s mouth next. Immediately, her blush returned to her face. Subconsciously, Paige laughed nervously and began playing with her ginger ponytail, saying softly, “Uh, thank you.” Eddie didn’t wait for any other response before walking towards his car, seeming almost as shocked as she was by the words that just left his mouth. Paige was thankful, because she wasn’t sure what else to say. So lost in her own thoughts that Paige didn’t realize that Eddie had taken off his shirt until it practically flew in front of her face, landing gently on Marmaduke. Paige could feel her face heating up again as she saw his bare skin, not sure if she should continue looking or avert her gaze. She’d never had a serious relationship, always too busy with horses, that she wasn’t really sure how to act in this case. It wasn’t like Eddie was a chore to look at. He had the body that showed that he was active, but didn’t spend his whole life counting macros or working out. Paige didn’t have a lot of time to ponder her predicament, because Eddie then asked if she could hold Marmaduke. Grabbing the lead, Paige told him, “Of course, Callie doesn’t need much time to get ready.” She began to gently stroke the filly’s neck, waiting for Eddie to change into dry clothes. He smiled to her, not wanting to seem too overly interested out of the blue. He had just gotten out of what he considered serious; even though the woman had been using him to try and get to his brother. He didn't want this to just be a reaction to that or make Paige feel like it. He wanted whatever he chose next to be special. If he was going to date Paige, he wanted to make sure his head was in the game and it wasn't such some summertime buzz. He smiled and nodded to her as she took the lead from him for Marmaduke, who seemed content to shovel the ground with her muzzle. He leaned against Shiner a moment before he went ahead and changed into the change of pants, slipping the shirt on over his head. Shiner had been through his share of Eddie's girlfriends and mess ups. He just wanted something to go right for once. Right now though, there was too much on his mind to even consider it an option, yet here he was. He suddenly couldn't stop thinking about it, couldn't stop wanting to do something about it. Sighing, he decided maybe it wouldn't hurt. As he came out of the trailer, he rubbed the back of his neck and looked to Paige. "What do you say, after this is all over with, going out to dinner or something? Or um...even some sort of picnic trail ride?" That way, at least she could leave if she didn't want to be around him. He wouldn't make things at the barn awkward for her, if things didn't work they'd just go back to the way things were before. Just passing nods and smiles.

As soon as Paige took the lead, Marmaduke began intently grazing. Which was fine by Paige. The filly was clearly distracted with grass and therefore couldn’t get into anymore trouble. At least, Paige hoped this was true. She couldn’t imagine that Eddie had endless extra sets of clothes in the backseat of his car. The situation was only hilarious because no one had gotten hurt. Paige didn’t want to try their luck again. She made sure she kept a firm hold on the lead and kept her gaze on Marmaduke, ready for anything the filly might try next. Eddie disappeared for only a moment, just long enough to change into dry clothes. When he walked back, she could tell that he had something on his mind. Paige assumed it had something to do with Marmaduke, the filly’s most recent escapade still on her mind. Paige was once again surprised by the words that left Eddie’s mouth. The blush that had seemed to finally recede began to creep back up again, her freckles stark against her pink skin. Paige couldn’t believe it was happening. Just mere moments ago, she didn’t think Eddie had even known her name and now, he was asking her out on a date? Paige almost wanted to ask who was putting him up to this, but instead, she giggled shyly and responded, “Sure, that would be fun.” For once, Paige found herself cursing her lack of dating experience. Since Eddie had suggested it, was she supposed to set a date? Normally, Paige wasn’t too embarrassed by her lack of knowledge, but she had also never been pursued by someone she had reciprocal feelings for. If that’s what this even was. For all she knew, Eddie was doing this just to be nice, and saw her only as a friend. Paige was going to have to just go with the flow, something that wasn’t easy for her. Paige glanced over to where Callie was standing, still hitched the trailer, and was happy to see she was calmly grazing. Turning her gaze back to Eddie, Paige held up the lead line still in her hand and said, “I can hold Marmaduke while you get Shiner ready. I just need to put a saddle on Callie, which won’t take any time at all.” Paige was hoping that Eddie would take her offer. The parade was about to start, but she wasn’t quite ready to walk away. Eddie grinned, he hadn’t felt this alive in forever. He blushed by his lack of planning though; he wouldn’t have another day off for six days...and they were going to be long days. One of the other techs was taking off so he’d be working at least ten hour shifts basically doing everything. He thought a moment, before her next question arose. “Sure, that would actually be great if you could help me.” He left Marmaduke to her and pulled Shiner out of the trailer. Marmaduke whinnied, nudging the other horses rump. He tied Shiner to the trailer and headed to the tack room, still contemplating. It occurred to him that since this was being ended at the fairgrounds, they weren’t too far from the winery. Howie could take Marmaduke back with the others, and then they could ride over to the winery for dinner. He laid eyes upon the blanket, and rolled his eyes. Caring it on top of the rest of Shiner’s tack, he looked to Paige and laughed. “Well, I figured out why he brought Marmaduke.” He set the tack down and unfurled the blanket. It was a pony sized blanket, but all the other ponies were too fat for it. It was a bit dusty, but looked like it had been a great pride in its prime. Golden and silver stars with the words of the stable across it. “Not bad...hopefully she won’t freak out.” He set it down on the back of the trailer, Marmaduke needed to dry first. He turned toward Shiner, doing his best to get her cleaned up. “I was thinking...” he started, not wanting to look at her in case it was a negative response...”the parade should end well before it gets dark, so since Howie’s making me deal with Marmaduke we’ll make him take her home and we can ride over to the winery with Dhiner and Callie?” He glanced at her a moment. “Richard should be back today, so...” Oh, that’s right. Paige and Rick had been friends. “Right, ummm Rick came back. You and him were pretty close, right?” God...how awkward would that be if she had actually liked Rick? And here he was trying to ask her out and now Rick was going to be here. His brothers always won because they had more time. He sighed, and went back to grooming Shiner in defeated silence.

Paige couldn’t help but smile internally as she saw a blush beginning to appear on Eddie’s face, he was pretty adorable. Although she wasn’t sure what sparked his apparent embarrassment. He seemed so confident, but maybe he was just as nervous about their encounter as she was. Paige couldn’t believe how happy she was when Eddie took her up on her offer to hold Marmaduke. She was just happy to be able to spend more time with him before the disaster that was sure to occur during the upcoming parade. Eyes followed Eddie as he entered the trailer and brought Shiner out, tightening her grip slightly on Marmaduke’s lead line as she whinnied. The last thing she wanted was another escape. When Eddie went back inside the trailer, Paige returned her attention back to Marmaduke, gently scratching behind her ears. That was Callie’s favorite itchy place, she was sure that Marmaduke would enjoy as well. Her head snapped up again as she heard Eddie speak to her again Paige couldn’t help but laugh at the teeny-tiny blanket Eddie was holding up. Leave it to Howie to bring an untrained horse to a parade just so he could show-off an outdated horse blanket. Doing her best not to snort, Paige told him, “Where in the world did he dig that up? I’ve been in every inch of Polaris’s tack room.”The conversation quickly changed back to their date? Meet-up? Picnic? Paige wasn’t even sure what to call it. She thought it sounded like a date, but what if she was totally misinterpreting Eddie’s intentions? She couldn’t believe he was suggesting that this, whatever it was, happen to soon. She thought she’d have more time to prepare. Paige told herself to take a breath and go with the flow for once in her life before she screwed this up, before it even got started. Paige nodded, hoping that she appeared more confident than she felt, and said warmly, “That would be a lot of fun, I haven’t been to the winery yet.” She winced internally, realizing how lame she sounded. How could she be so fearless when it came to jumping on 1200lb animals and yet be completely clueless when it came to talking to the opposite gender? Paige’s eyes widened at the mention of Rick returning back to the states, excited that her friend would be returning. They had gotten pretty close before he had moved away with his boyfriend, and she had missed him terribly. However, Paige couldn’t help but notice a slight shift in Eddie’s demeanor. Was he jealous of their friendship? Concerned about starting a love triangle? Paige wanted to put him at ease; she and Rick had been just friends, nothing more. And although they were close, it was in a brother/sister sort of way, not in any sort of romantic fashion. She responded to his question firmly, “We were just good friends, it’ll be nice to see him again.” Paige hoped she had made herself clear. She knew how close siblings could be, considering her relationship with her own brother, and she never wanted to interfere with that. There was a breath he had been holding in that he hadn't even realized, that he released as she noted that they had just been friends. What was Eddie worrying about anyway? His brother was into guys, right? Well, he had dated girls in highschool...hadn't he? He couldn't keep up with his own life, much less the life of his siblings. He frowned-he really should get to know all of them better, see them more often. He was always busy with work, Howie was always busy with the farm, they had left poor Rick to fend for himself. He shook his head, turning to Paige with a smile. He was nervous as anything, he hadn't had a real date in a while...not since...he frowned a little. That was just a bunch of bullshit with her trying to pull that it was Howie's kid. As soon as the paternity test came back, she had fled. His gaze focused back on Paige again, and softened. "Sorry, my thoughts are racing a thousand miles a minute. Let's get the trail ride over with, then we'll talk after?" He turned back to Shiner and started tacking her up in silence, his mind a mess right now. What was he doing asking the stable help on a date? Howie would be livid. She was technically a boarder, a client, a coworker, whatever you wanted to call it. Then again, Howie was dating their dressage teacher-so what did it matter if he did what he wanted to do for a change? He led Shiner out of the trailer, standing there and looking out over the pier. The sun was bright, but he took in a deep breath and smiled, looking back to Paige again. "Isn't this a lovely view? Let's savor it a moment."
