The magic in Firefly Falls was wild and untamed with the Alders first laid eyes upon it. While they wanted to create a safe haven for themselves and other magical beings, they did not want to deter the regular folks from coming to the town. In lieu of this, they created a pact with the ancient tribe; and the protection spell was created. The protection spell put a large glamour spell on the school, hiding magical creatures from the naked non magical eye. Horns hidden, wings hidden (well, obviously not if you're flying), fangs, what have you, are hidden from the regular human eye. This cannot of course extend to the half-breeds; such as centaurs, satyrs, or mermaids; that are two pieces of different species. The glamour spell placed on the school diminishes the further out you get from the school. It allows regular people to live in blissful ignorance of the horrors that are truly out there. However, it comes with a price-if a magical person and a regular person were to fall in love, the magical person cannot tell the regular person, or show them their true form, except through the bonding ritual. Otherwise, the spell on the island will take its payment...in the magical creatures life. (This is not true of cursed creatures, such as werewolves and vampires. Please see below for rules governing them.) If they are to find out by another mean, such as intuition, then it is okay. Not like they'll believe anyone else anyway!
These are just some basic magical character ideas, and (generally) what is already on the site. If there is something you do not see here, you are still welcome to RP them, as long as you keep them within reason.
Cursed Individuals
Curses are those placed from one magical individual onto a regular individual, turning them into something new. If the curse is a change in form, or to bring out the beast within, then the individual is
unable to control themselves in beast form. They can sometimes see what they are doing in these forms, but are unable to stop it. This may result in hurting loved ones. Curses cannot easily be removed; it is not so easy as true loves kiss.
Curses can either be placed on individuals by witches, sorcerers, or gods. Generally the person that placed the curse has to be the one to reverse it, as very rarely are curses able to be circumvented, unless there were specifications on them. (Such as the Beauty and the Beast where he found the goodness in himself.) These must be specified in the character's application.
The only thing you cannot curse someone into becoming is a fey or a unicorn. In other words, you can curse someone's appearance to change but you cannot curse them to have magic. You can however curse them to block their magic, or curse them out of their original form (such as cursing a unicorn into a human.)
The Bonding Ritual
Generally, the bonding ritual is done with someone special, such as a life partner. It can only be done with a few individuals at a time, and gives them power over the magic weilder-not the other way around. The bonding ritual also takes a significant amount of spirit power to complete, and in doing so it transfers some of the magic to the bonded regular. Therefore; they have some bit of power over the magical creature they have been bonded to.
Mixed Species
((If someone knows of a better name for these then please tell me
)
Mixed Species are generally half human, such as centaurs, dragon folk, satyrs, and mermaids. We are also expanding it out to griffons, manticores, and minotaurs, though I don't think very many people will create these. These creatures/half humans cannot hide their animal halves, and so generally cannot go into town. Additional glamour spells would be needed, and these would have a limited time effect on them. Therefore, these creatures/humans generally live in the wilderness, in the forgotten tribe area, or, in some cases, on the reservation.
These type of characters are generally for more advanced roleplayers, as they can be...difficult to work with. However, if you're up to the task feel free to add one to the site. They have limitations since they are unable to interact regularly.
Demi-gods
Demi-gods are the offspring of a god and a human. Typically, it is a human female and a male god, with the rarer occasion being a female goddess and a male human. They will only display powers from their god parent, such as Posiedon's son being able to manipulate water, Athena's daughter being a master of strategic planning. (Yes I'm stealing thoughts from Percy Jackson, shush.) Some may be born with the ability to do magic, some may not, it depends on what type of god their parent was.
They are often on the run or in hiding because the other gods are trying to kill them off, but the school provides a safe haven for them. They are more rare these days as the gods do not get involved in human affairs as often as they did in olden times. You can use any basis of religion you want, but please pick a deity that is not ALL powerful and whose powers can be defined. Try to avoid common religions from now, such as Hindu, to avoid violating our religion laws. More historical religions, such as Greek, Celtic, Egyptian, Byzantium, Roman, etc. will be more preferred.
The lesser deities offspring would also fall into this category, such as nypmhs of Aphrodite, but they will have considerably less power. Please try to limit yourself to one or two demi-gods, since we do not have a very large population on the site yet.
Vampires
Vampiric creatures can only turn creatures of their same species, (human to human, horse to horse, etc), and generally must drink from their own species at least once a year to avoid going insane with blood lust. Different vampire species exist to allow following of different myths/legends. Please make sure to note the in your history which myth you might be following.
As stated in the guidelines above, please remember-the further away from pure you are, the less power you will have.
Were Creatures
Weres generally begin shifting with the hormonal changes of puberty. At first, they will not be able to control themselves in beast form and not really be aware. They can certainly learn to control it with time, depending on their level of the curse. Again, the further away from pure the less control or power you will have over when you can shift.
Most weres are humans who turn into beasts, however in some cases, there are beasts that turn into humans on the full moon. Generally these creatures never gain full control over their powers. It is possible however for a werewolf to fall in love with a real wolf and a were-human to fall in love with a human, etc. Weres can only transform into the one animal. Generally these are large predatory animals such as wolves, panthers, etc. You are NOT going to find a were mouse. Weres can ONLY be human to animal-you are not going to be able to transform from one animal into another.
True cursed werewolves may never be able to control themselves, and may never be aware in beast form. Again, it is up to you the level of the curse.
Shifters
Shifters are not cursed, and have control over their abilities. Shifters can start shifting at a fairly young age, sometimes before puberty. Shifters tend to be much more level headed about it, and have knowledge of their abilities. They are aware when they are in their other form. As a basic shifter, you only have the ability to shift into one other animal. Shifters are generally human only, but can be animals that shift into humans. Shifters who are human by DNA can eventually learn to shift into more forms than one, while shifters whose DNA is animal based can only shift into one.
Generally shifters who are animals are the product of a breeding between an animal female and a human shifter male. Some of the offspring may end up being able to shift into humans.
Witches and Warlocks
There are generally two types of witches: Regulars and Magical.
Magicals are witches that have contracted with either a cursed individual, such as being a blood slave for a vampire, tied their life force to a spirit of some sort, or who have sold their soul to the fey. In the past, witches have even been able to convince gods/goddesses to contract with them, and could conceivably gain power by contracting with a demi-god. Typically magical witches are not very nice people. Those that have tied their life force to a spirit can be taken over by that spirit eventually. Those that sell their soul to the fey tend to be the most powerful, but also tend to live shorter lives. Those that have contracted with a cursed individual are generally considered the weakest, because the engagement can be broken off at any time and they are more at the mercy of another while the other two are commanding the forces. Magical witches can use magic freely without the use of spells, such as telekinetic abilities.
Regular witches are the witches that have no power in themselves, and use potions, spells, and whatever else to perform their magic. These witches tend to be seen as the "good witches" as they do not spoil their purity by dabbling with selling themselves or controlling others. They can perform some quite amazing magic, if they know the right spell to use though. While they in truth are just human, they are not affected by the glamour spell and can see all magical creatures for what they are. Some do develop into psychics. While as stated above these are generally the good witches, these type of witches tend to be the ones responsible for cursing others; generally at the cost of their own soul or life.
Witches are generally only human, and not other creatures.
Sorcerers
Sorcerers are those born with the ability to do actual magic, though generally need some form of conducting agent such as the traditional wand or staff to centralize the magic. Some are more powerful than others, depending on their lineage. They are the descendants of magical witch demi gods, which is what causes them to have a central ability. Some will branch out to learn other things, but your general sorcerer will only have control over one type of magic, such as having control over healing, life, death, plants, animals, etc. Their abilities tend to grow as they study them, and it does take some time to hone them. Their original powers tend to be weak. Sorcerers can perform other magic much in the same way witches do, but tend to focus on their central ability.
Sorcerers can also contract with spirits or the fey to make themselves stronger, but it is done with greater risk.
Psychics
Psychics are those individuals born with the ability to see "beyond the void" in a number of different ways. They can be human or creature. The glamour spell only affects them partly; while they cannot necessarily see the magical creature they tend to be able to sense when one is near. Most of a psychic's power comes from their emotions. There are four main types of physics, and one rarer type:
Telekinetic physics can move things with their mind. They tend to not be able to control this at first, and are probably to be blamed for the reports of poltergeists. Their abilities are heavily tied to their emotions, which they have to learn to control in order to control their telekinetic abilities. Anger tends to be responsible for quite a bit of their ability, and they will send people and things flying if they are not careful.
Premonition psychics can see the future or the past. This is generally triggered by touching a person or object that has a strong event about to take place, but can also be in the form of dreams. Premonition psychics will never be completely able to control their ability-so they'd never be able to stand at the powerball purchase bar and get a read off of it. Their power tends to see others timeline than themselves.
Medium psychics are those that can see the spirits of the dead. Some choose to try and help them, and try to make them move on to the next life and let go. Others are tormented by the ability. Spirits can often sense that a medium is near, and tend to seek them out in the worst possible way. Mediums tend to be the people that get possessed the most, as they are easier to target than your average human. However, they also know to be looking for such attacks, but there is no way for them to block their mind completely. Mediums tend to be diagnosed as schizophrenics.
Empath psychics are those that can feel the emotion of others and in some cases, push their own emotions out to others. Whether you are able to put on a happy face or not, you would not be able to hide it from an empath psychic. Depending on their knowledge of their powers, they may unwittlingly push their emotions out onto others or not, and often do so in extreme emotional states.
Aura psychics can see everyone's aura, which can be blinding at times. They are argued to be the most powerful of the psychics, and are most known to work with people to try and find themselves. Aura readers would tend to be your shamans, as they have the ability to truly cleanse or help you change your aura. Only oneself can change it for the better; aura readers can also turn your aura into something dreadful all on their own over time. Aura psychics can see through the glamour spell entirely. They are the most rare of the psychics.
Wargs
Wargs are humans born with the ability to control animals. They can slip into their mind and see the world through their eyes. Some say that they are the product of gods breeding with animals, and others that they are diluted shifters, but their true origin is unknown. Depending on their level of power and their level of study, this can sometimes only be done with a bonded animal, while others can do it on almost any animal. On smaller, more mindless animals it tends to be easier than on larger animals. The transition between minds tends to drain them, and they typically cannot move during the time because it puts their body into an almost trance like state.
The strongest can control humans, but since it drains the wargs energy, this has been known to kill a few in the past.
Elementals
Elementals are the descendants of the original golems created by the gods that harnessed the power of an element for use in battle. While golems themselves tended to be mindless drones, the gods did sometimes like to make them anatomically correct, and would sometimes use them like a kid would their barbie doll.
Elementals have control over a single element, such as water, fire, earth, wind, (no I'm not about to break out into Captain Planet song...young people won't even get that). They can be either human or animal. They cannot branch away from their element, and cannot manipulate it to do other things; such as a lava elemental would not be able to create fire. In their lower stages, the element must be present before they can begin manipulating it, but eventually they may be able to create the element from the environment; such as creating ice from the water droplets in the air.
Elementals must be tied to a tangible element, and cannot be an abstract element such as love.
The Fey
The fey were creatures created by the gods to protect the planet and tend to it, since the gods themselves were doing other things. The fey loved all the flora and fauna of the world that they tended, having another dimension, known as the fey world, that they called their true home. There are those that remained within the regular world at all times, and others that would 'commute'. However, when humanity was introduced to the world, many of the fey turned. They were so consumed by their hatred that their powers of nurture turned to powers of destruction. They destroyed most of the fey world, turning it into what is now known as the void. The void is where many of the creatures that are widely known were created from; the original vampires; the original werewolves.
The fey themselves could be referred to as angels and demons. There are some that are still beautiful, still pure, still wish to help others. There are those that are beautiful and still hate humanity. There are those that are twisted and dark of appearance, but have a heart of gold. The fey are probably the hardest to explain of any species, since they are such a broad section.
It is rare that a fey is actually born, they must earn their powers. They have such a wide range of powers that it is hard to explain. They are what we know of as fairies, elves, angels, and demons.
Unicorns
Traditionally only known as an equine type, here you can create unicorns that are any creature. The commonality is that they have a horn atop their head.
It depends on the type of storyline/myth you choose to follow as to what type of magic you want the unicorn to have, as there are many different types. The horn is really only an extension of their body, and the source of their magical power. Many unicorns are elementals with a focus of their magic. Some unicorns only have the horn and do not seem to possess the ability to do magic.
One thing is for sure: their is magic in unicorn horns, and if it is removed from atop their head then the unicorn will die. They tend to avoid others all together because of this, and tend to be very untrusting.
Pegasi
Pegasi are traditionally seen as winged horses, but here we are using it to define any creature with wings that are not normally there in their species. (Not a bird or a bat in other words.) Pegasi themselves do not possess any magical abilities. They tend to be shyer than your average creature, and untrusting. They are not easily captured; whether metaphorically or physically. Because keeping their wings bound all the type hurts considerably, they tend to live on the outskirts of the town where they will not be seen as often.
The only characters that will absolutely not be accepted are: Gods (demi-gods are acceptable),
Traditional Angel/Demon (see fey section above), and Aliens (other dimensional beings is debatable).
If you feel we have missed a common magical creature and should list it here, please feel free to contact us and we can add it here!
