You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Elliot couldn’t help the shiver of excitement that traveled down his spine as he entered his classroom. After several months hunting and interviewing for a teaching job, he had finally landed the gig at Quasar Academy. He could have had any associate professor job he had wanted with his degree. But, having taught at the collegiate level for a couple of years, he soon realized that his passion was teaching high school. He wanted to re-spark the interest in American history, just like his own high school teacher had done for him all those years ago.
Placing his old briefcase on his desk, he gazed around the classroom. He probably could have put a little more effort into decorating the class, especially since he would be teaching middle school students in addition to high school students at the Academy. But, he found it was so difficult to concentrate what little attention he had on something so trivial. Not when he had to worry about finding an apartment, unpacking said apartment (which still was currently in a state of disarray), and getting Turbo set up at the new farm. He had managed to put up a map of the United States along the back wall and inspirational quotes from founding fathers were thrown haphazardly around the classroom, but it still left a lot of empty wall space. He would find stuff eventually, and more likely than not, he would place student work on the walls as the year progressed.
Eli sat down in his chair, looking up at the clock on the wall above the door. He was early, which was honestly a first for him. Typically, he was the teacher running into the classroom at the start of lecture, his students already in their seats. But, he had been so excited this morning that he hadn’t been able to sit at home anymore, despite the fact that he knew he should have worked harder at unpacking more of his stuff. Elliot was so excited that he couldn’t contain himself and jumped from his seat again, nearly knocking the chair over. He rummaged through his brief case to find his notes. When he finally found the ones for his first class, crumpled of course at the bottom of the bag, he turned to the chalk board, and began scrawling bullet points for his class on the board.

Rose stepped into the boundary of the school, returning from a brief and anxious filled visit into the woods to be Duchess for a few moments before going to her first class of the day, and well ever. She walked through the grounds and any student who looked her way gained a warey glare from her. She avoided all who may have tried to approach her, skirting around them and simply going out of her way to avoid them. Shouldn't they all be at class? True there weren’t many outside this morning so it was possible that they all had a free block right now. It was her first day in any school so Rose did not yet know that bells marked when classes started as a result she did not realize that she was almost thirty minutes early for class. At the gardens she stopped to remove a single rose from one of the rosebushes, pricking her finger as she did so, noticing for the first time the thorns that covered the vines. Carefully this time she used her fingernails to cut said vine and stuck the rose in the left side of her hair after examining it for further thorns. Then she moved inside the school and consulted her timetable, slowing but not stopping. Elliot Cook was her teacher for some sort of a history class. American history to be exact. Whatever that was. After checking a map, she made her way over to his classroom, prepared to get an earful for being late. She hadn’t exactly been hurrying to school, she wanted to make sure that she could get through class without fainting. She thought she could do it but it would be close. If worse came to worse she could always leave.
She followed the map and made her way to Mr. Cook’s classroom. When she arrived, before opening the door she took a deep breath, maybe she would be able to sneak in unnoticed. Holding her breath, Rose slowly opened the door and peeked in. Then she let the door open wide and she stared her mouth open in shock at the empty classroom aside from a single man writing on the blackboard. Once more Rose checked the map. She had been sure she had found the right room. Looking up again, Rose called out to the man. “Excuse me sir, but I can’t seem to find the class for, uh…” She looked down at her schedule, “American history.”

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ The piece of chalk in Eli’s hand flew as he scratched the notes onto the board. It screeched softly as he wrote, but Eli hardly even noticed. It wasn’t until the piece cracked that Elliot took a step back and realized that the words were completely illegible. If he couldn’t read his writing, and knew what they were supposed to say, there was no way his class was going to be able to decipher them. Taking a deep breath, Elliot quickly erased the board, creating a blank canvas for his second attempt. This time, when he picked up another piece of chalk, he started more carefully and slowly. It was partly a result of Elliot taking his time, but also partially because he was sure that his ADHD medications were finally starting to kick in, as a sense of calm was starting to blanket his scattered mind.
So focused at the task at hand, Elliot didn’t even notice a second presence in the room. It wasn’t until he heard a small voice call out that he startled and looked towards the door to find a petite young girl standing in the door way, a schedule in her hand and a look of confusion on her face. Elliot looked down at the watch on the wrist, wanting to make sure he hadn’t lost track of time as he was prone to. However, a quickly glance told him that he still had about 30 minutes until the late bell rung. Smiling at her, Elliot kindly said, “You’ve found the right place! I’m Dr. Cook, I’ll be your teacher. There is still about 30 minutes until class starts, but you are more than welcome to have a seat and keep me company if you would like. Anywhere will do. Since you’re the first one here, you get prime reality.”
Elliot didn’t wait for an answer, and turned back to the board. He knew that if he stopped now, he’d only get half of the notes on the blackboard, and what kind of impression would that make? However, Elliot called over his shoulder, “Is today your first day? It’s mine. I’m a little bit nervous, to be honest.” Eli knew he was rambling, but he could sense the girl’s anxiety, and he was hoping that by talking, he could help to ease some of her fears.

"Early!" Rose exclaimed in dismay as Dr. Cook told her how early she was. What was she to do now? She supposed she could take him up on his offer of staying, it would be good to get answers for some of her questions and get to know a teacher while she was at it. The only question was: could she survive an hour and a half? Maybe. She was getting better at staying in form. She could no longer feel the energy draining away from her. "Alright, I'll wait here. Just a heads up though I may have to leave before class ends because of uhh..." Rose blanked for a moment even though she had already chosen her story last night before continuing, "health reasons." She took the chair nearest to the door - just in case she needed a quick exit. When Dr. Cook spoke again, her eyes widened and she moved forward in her seat a bit. "It is! I've never really been to any school before, so it's new." She paused then quickly added, "I mean like a uh... famous school. I've been to school before of course." Which she had... kinda. Her school had been a lot more flexible then the ones of humans. It was mostly lessons from her father, about the world that he had been a part of, lessons that she never listened to because she didn't see the point. Looking back, Rose wished that young Duchess had cared. "Dr. Cook?" Rose asked, leaning further forward in her seat, "Would you mind if I asked you what kind of stuff we will be learning in this class?" Hopefully the word 'american' wasn't widely known and he would explain it. If not Rose could only hope that he would give her context clues to figure out what it meant. (Tag: jenn )

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Elliot was glad when the girl stated that she was going to stay. Eli tended get more work done when he was alone and was able to fully focus on the task at hand, but Elliot was an outgoing creature, and would always prefer the company of others rather than being alone. When she mentioned having to leave for health reasons, his mind immediately leaped towards the monthly changes that all young ladies her age cycled through. He had an older sister growing up, he wasn’t new or shy about periods. However, not wanting to embarrass the girl, who clearly wasn’t comfortable talking about it, Elliot simply said, “That won’t be a problem. I don’t have any rules about leaving the classroom. I never saw the point. Sometimes, you just need a mental break to step out and regroup.”
So busy with his notes, Elliot didn’t even notice the young girl was stuttering. To be completely honest, he only caught bits and pieces, but was able to make out enough to know that this was her first time being at such a prominent school. Nodding, Elliot told me, “Me as well. It’s a little intimidating, isn’t it? But, just remember, everyone here has been in those same shoes, too, and I’m sure your classmates will be more than willing to help you out.”
Elliot had just finished writing up the last of his notes when the teen asked her next question. Turning around, he saw that she had sat down in one of the desks closest to the door. As she placed the chalk down back on the tray and sat in his chair, he said, “This year, our discussions will focus on the beginnings of this country. We’ll start with the discovery of America, and work our way through to civil war. Next year’s history class will pick up right where this one left off!” Pausing for a moment, Eli frown for a moment before saying, “I’m sorry, I don’t think I caught your name.” Elliot didn’t think she had said it, but it wouldn’t be the first time he had to ask for someone’s name multiple time. He had an awful memory for names and faces.

Dr. Cook was extremely friendly and did not seem to mind when she told him she may have to leave - that was a relief. In fact he seemed to be perfectly fine with the idea - even understanding. "Thank you." Rose said softly, not sure if he would be able to hear her and not really caring if he could or not. Because hey! She had said it hadn't she? Wasn't that what counted?
Thankfully he had been so engulfed in his writing his notes that he hadn't noticed her moment of forgetfulness and talked as if it hadn't happened. To her surprise, Rose found out that he was also new to the school. And he reminded her that everyone had been new at some point or another. "No way!" She exclaimed in surprise, "I thought everyone else had already been here for ages!" Those sentences made her feel much less nervous, which allowed her to calm down a bit and stop playing with her hair which she had been doing since she started talking when she came in. Softer again but not so quietly and before - loud enough he could hear her this time she added "Thank you." to the end of her sentence.
Dr. Cook then finished writing his notes for the class and he sat down in his chair to answer her question. Apparently the word 'America' was widely known as he didn't tell her exactly what it was. Rose however managed to deduce that America was a country and that she was inside that country. Dr. Cook then asked her name and Rose's cheeks went red with embarrassment. She had forgotten to let him know her name! "Sorry my name is Rose." She paused there before remembering that he would want her last name too. "Rose Riven. Sorry, my full name is Rose Riven." She took a deep breath, full of jittery first day nerves. "Will-will we be learning about the island at all?" She asked her teacher, hopping that the question didn't sound too stupid.

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Elliot thought that the girl may have said something, but if she did, it was so quiet, Eli didn’t even recognize the potential vocalization until he had begun speaking again. If she had said something, she didn’t appear to be too perturbed that Eli hadn’t responded. The thought was soon pushed out of his head as the conversation continued. Elliot smiled a little bit at the young girl’s incredulity that she wouldn’t be the only new kid to ever step onto the academy’s grounds. He nodded a little bit and said, “We get lots of transfers every year. Most students don’t start until they are 13 years old, although occasionally we’ll have younger students attend. You definitely aren’t alone, and I am confident that you will find friends who will show you the ropes.”
Elliot couldn’t help by sympathize with the girl as she introduced herself as Rose. He could remember being that nervous before, terrified of being made fun of by other students. Elliot presented his nerves in a very different way, usually by non-stop chatter and an excess energy that prevented him from sitting still for even a moment, but the underlying feelings were the same. He smiled kindly at her before responding, “No need to apologize, it’s nice to meet you Rose!” His smiled widened as she asked another question, happy that his new student seemed to be generally interested in his favorite topic. Eli shook his head, then continued, “Unfortunately, no. That’s something that taught in the modern history class you will take during your final year at Quasar Academy. However, I can an answer any questions that you may have about the island!” He was knew to Firefly Falls himself, however, Elliot had prepped for all of his classes this summer, so he had a pretty good feel for the history of the small island.
