And I promise you kidThat I’ll give so much more than I get Austin’s footfalls hardly made a sound on the dirt path he was running on, but even if it did, he wouldn’t have been able to hear it over the 80’s rock playlist he had blasting in his ears. His breaths were drawn in evenly through his nose and out through his mouth, a practice that had practically become second-nature. Austin’s long-strides were easily matched by Ivy beside him, and the pair covered distance without hardly a thought. Austin had picked up running while he was a cadet as a part of his physical fitness test, but it was a habit that was hard to drop. Very rarely did Austin start his mornings off with something other than a run, and it almost always had to do with either work or severe injury. For Austin, it was a way that ensured that his day always started off on the right foot. Plus, Ivy was able to stretch her legs and get off some pent of energy, and it usually meant that Austin returned to his house in one piece.
Austin followed the path through the woods. There were several trails, and he had run all of them at least once, but this one was his favorite. It was challenging, with lots of steep hills and quick turns, and gave him the distance that he craved. As a result, Austin only ever attempted it if he didn’t have much on his mind. His entire focus needed to be on his run, lest he trip and fall, or even worse, picked up too much speed and wasn’t able to finish the loop. Checking his watch again, Austin saw that he was still pacing pretty well. His Garmin watch told him that his average pace was about 9 and half minutes per mile. It was slower than his average mile pace, which was closer to 8 and a half, but was the perfect speed for this trail. His limbs were starting to fatigue, he could feel the soreness in his quads and calves, but he only had about a mile and half left, and so he wasn’t too concerned. Grinning to himself, he kept his eyes on the trail, but murmured breathlessly to the German shepherd beside him, “Almost there baby girl, keep up with good work.” Austin was more so encouraging himself, but Ivy, panting ever so slightly, pricked her ears forward, her tail wagging vigorously at the sound of Austin’s voice.

jenn I hope you don't mind...it seemed...fitting. "Damien this isn't funny get back here!"It had happened a time or to before that if something happened he didn't like, he'd just shift into his canine form and dart off down the trails leaving her with his spooked horse. He was still getting used to riding with the prosthetic leg, and sometimes things didn't go as planned. Chrissy could feel for him though, it wasn't every day you had that much trauma in your life. Him letting loose like this...at least it was something. She could hear his bark up ahead as she quickly got off her horse and scurried to pick up Lucky's reins and to shove the prosthetic into their saddle bag. Just in case he ever wanted to try to just ride side saddle, she had gotten a special saddle bag made-looking like a bed roll-to hold it. He was beligerent in what he wanted to do; he wanted to be just like his father when it came to horses, and so he of course never used it. But it was especially useful for times like this when he ran off. She took the reins off of Lucky's head, who was feet shuffling, ears flapping, and gnawing at the bit, not sure if she should run from what she just saw or just...roll over dead. Chrissy patted her and smiled, not really sure what to do to calm the mare right now. It wasn't every day that you saw whoever was riding you magically shift into a three legged dog and bolt off. Chrissy led Lucky back to her horse, mounting back up-she'd just have to pony Lucky along until she found Damien. She kissed to the mare who moved off easily, without even any leg, and they started trotting through the forest looking for signs of the paw prints. However, what caught her attention was when they intersected with another path, and suddenly there were two sets of dog prints; some new that hadn't been wind touched-that was missing a pad amongst them, and some along with a pair of running shoes. While she was no expert tracker, those were new ish and couldn't have been but from a few hours ago...there was someone else on the trails. She gulped...that could mean trouble for the both of them. She whistled, and both horses jumped into a lope; she had to find Damien and fast. If there was a human running with a dog, who knew what the human really was? It could just be an innocent human running with their innocent, unmagical, dog...but it could also be a hunter and hunting dog, or worse-a were and their companion. If they found Damien...he'd be lunch. "Damien!"She yelled again, the note of panic in her voice. Damien was quite the happy camper hobbling along, kicking up the dust as he sprinted as fast as his three legs could carry him through the woods. He was young and careless, not even noticing the other set of footprints that he was headed for. He sniffed at the air, and smelled a familiar scent. He couldn't quite place it, but he knew it was friendly. He barked, calling out to whatever canine it was that he had surely met before, and picked up the pace. He could hear his aunt yelling for him in the distance, but this was more exciting. He barked again as he saw the shadows up ahead of a dog and a person, and he smelled the air again-finally placing where he knew them. He knew the person better than the dog, and didn't think twice about what they would be doing here. With a happy playful bark he sped up, snapped his teeth playfully in the air as he half leapt half skipped over Ivy, doing a bit of a side flip as he turned to look at Austin and her landing in a mess of play stance and just plain landing on his face. He barked again as he sprung up into play stance, and then took off like a bullet again, the missing fourth leg not bothering him at all. Chrissy could hear his bark in the distance, and was relieved to hear it being playful instead of oppressed, but she didn't slow down. She stopped calling out though; his barks were getting closer which meant she was catching up-and the footprints of the person and the other dog had slowed, showing they were nearing too. It wasn't until she came within eye sight that she woahed them both. It wasn't the dog she recognized, black dog butts looked like black dog butts. However, that human butt she had seen before, and for a brief time, known intimately. But what was it doing here on the island where she had taken Damien to be safe? Was he tracking them? It couldn't be coincidence...she didn't believe in those. She hesitantly urged her horse forward, Lucky following behind listening, dumbfounded still and shell shocked. It wasn't like she hadn't seen that dog before, but never...like that. Chrissy gulped. This wasn't going to end up being a happy reunion, especially if Austin was here to arrest her for something she'd done in the past, and she couldn't find Damien before then. She looked at him though, and didn't see any hand cuffs or gun attached to him. He could simply just be out for his run right now, not having anything on his mind other than that. Her mind raced, wondering away at all the possibilities. Had he moved on? Would he recognize her? "Detective Clark, is that you?"She finally worked up the courage to say, her voice weaker and a bit meeker than before as her throat went dry. Whatever he was doing here instead of the West Coast...that would remain to be seen. But she would be damned if he'd try to take Damien away from her, or anything of the sort...even if it meant having to hide his body.
