You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Elliot was mid-sentence when the bell rang, indicating the end of classes for the day. As he watched the students begin shuffling their papers and putting their pens away, he knew he had only moments before they were sprinting out the door, not wanting to spend another minute longer in a classroom than they had to. In one breath, Elliot raised his voice over the noise of chairs moving and feet shuffling and said quickly, “We’ll finish this up next class. Don’t forget to finish your book reviews on your favorite historical figure, they’re due to me at midnight tonight! Have a great rest of your afternoon!” He was barely able to get the last word out before the stampede began to get to the door. Elliot remained where he was in front of his chalkboard, watching the students filing out.
It didn’t take very long before Elliot found himself alone in the classroom, excited chatter from the hallways streaming in to create steady background noise. Despite being exhausted from a full day’s worth of teaching, Eli was happy. All of his classes went well, at least in his opinion. He was able to captivate at least half of the students. History was one of those topics that you either enjoyed or you didn’t and so if he was even able to spark interest in a few students, he was pleased with himself.
Elliot stared at his desk for a moment, hesitating to sit down. He knew he needed to grade his first period exams from a few days ago, especially since he was expecting an influx of papers tonight. But it had been several days since he’d been out to the farm to spend time with Turbo, and he desperately wanted some time in the saddle. Sighing heavily though, he did the responsible thing and pulled out his chair before having a seat. It was already Thursday, which meant the weekend was only a couple of days away. He would rather spend all day Saturday at the barn rather than grading. So, unlocking the drawer where he kept all assignments that needed to be graded, he pulled out the stack of papers sitting on top. Then, after spending a few moments looking for some kind of writing utensil on his disorganized desk, he finally found one and got to wor.

Richard's eyes moved back and forth as he sat at his desk reading over student reports. They were asked to write a 5 page report about their favorite history subject. Most students choose civil war battles, British monarchy, or various other known things. Hell one kid even wrote about the day they bought their dog. It wasn't major history but it was still history. This last paper though, He read repeatedly but wasn't even sure what it was about. He couldn't place the time period or if this was even true. He threw the paper down on his desk and leaned back in his chair grumbling under his breath. He thought all the students would pick popular subjects, one if he needed to could do a quick google search. But this one, no matter how much he searched he couldn't find a lick of anything being true. [break][break] Sighing, he heaved himself up with the paper in hand. Two classrooms down from him was the history teacher, maybe he knew of this subject, or if the whole paper was rambling nonsense. Richard poked his head into the classroom finding the teacher at his desk. He elegantly knocked on the door before walking in, almost like a lost kid. He looked around the room to find any evidence of the man's name and found it on the chalk board in the corner. "Mr. Cook, if it wouldn't trouble you. I have a question that maybe you could help me with."

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Grading was tedious, it was easily Elliot’s least favorite thing to do. Every little thing was a distraction: the fly that was buzzing loudly at the window trying to escape, the sound of a locker slamming shut, the faint sound of laughter echoing in the hallway. It took every ounce of self-control to remain on task, refocusing his attention every time he felt himself slipping into a daydream. The prize of getting to spend Saturday was the only thing that was motivating him to finish.
So focused on grading that Elliot didn’t hear anyone approaching and only realized that someone was at the door of his classroom until he heard the faint knocking. Elliot looked up quickly, his glasses sliding down his nose, half-expecting to see a student who had forgotten something. He was surprised to see another teacher walking slowly into the classroom. He recognized the man, and believed that his name was Richard, but he couldn’t remember anything else about him, including his last name or what subject he taught. Which, quite frankly, was pretty good for Eli. He was terrible with remembering names, and he was slightly impressed with himself for knowing that much. Pushing up his glasses haphazardly with a finger, Elliot smiled and told him, “Please, call me Elliot! No trouble at all, what’s going on?” Elliot gestured to Richard to sit down at the chair next to his desk that Elliot used to have one-on-one meetings with before setting his pen down and pushing the exams to the side. He was reaching his breaking point anyway and the distraction was very welcomed.

Richard watched Elliot motion to the chair across from him he sat down in it, seeming utterly defeated. He placed the paper down on the desk. "My students had to write a 5 page essay on their favorite history subject. But this one is just boggling me. None of it seems true." He took a pen out of his pocket and pointed at the first sentence. "It's not even thesis of what the paper is about. It's just a jumbled mess about a bunch of history subjects that I couldn't even find on a simple search." He leaned back in the chair completely perplexed. [break][break] Before Elliot could answer, Richard spoke again. "I graded a lot of papers on civil war battles, the queen of England, and even one about the student's dog. I had no problems with those it's just this one." He placed the pen down on the desk, still confused.

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Elliot’s gaze followed Richard as he walked to his desk and took a seat. He listened intently as the teacher explained his predicament, a puzzled look appearing as Richard discussed the oddities of the paper. Richard did not seem like an unintelligent man, so the paper must have been a complete mess to leave him so baffled. Elliot wasn’t so sure he’d be able to help, but he was more than willing to give it a shot. His eyes followed Richard’s pen to the first sentence and was about to begin reading when Richard spoke again. Elliot’s eyes snapped back to where the man was sitting, looking utterly defeated. Most other people, Elliot was sure, would be able to scan the paper while he was speaking, but Eli knew his mind didn’t quite work that way. He was either going to miss something in the paper or miss something that Richard said, both would leave him feeling pretty guilty. When Elliot was sure that Richard was done speaking, he smiled and said, “Don’t worry, we’ll get to the bottom of this!”
Elliot picked up the paper from his desk and began reading. Richard wasn’t kidding; this paper made absolutely no sense. Not only was the paper grammatically incorrect, but the sentences didn’t flow together and none of the sentences seemed to be true. The farther he read, the more his brow furrowed. The story seemed familiar, but the dates and names weren’t matching up. Elliot was by no means the ultimate history guide, but he was familiar with many obscure pieces, and he was sure that this paper was wrong.
Flipping to the second page, Elliot continued to read, his mind working in overdrive. Why did it sound so familiar but so foreign at the same time? When he reached the bottom of the second page, it finally hit him. He slammed the paper down with way more force than intended, his hand making a dull thud, and he began chuckling. Looking back up at Richard, Elliot, still laughing, told him, “Your student is simultaneously one of the most hardworking and laziest students I have ever encountered.” Smirking, he continued, “You see, the story seemed familiar, but details were incorrect. It took a moment for me to place, but this is the tale from Lord of the Rings, with different names and dates. If I had to guess, your student copied and pasted from Wikipedia or another similar source, then went in and changed details so that no matter how hard you searched, you’d never be able to find his source of thievery.” Shaking his head, Elliot told him, “Quite frankly, I can’t imagine this took less time than actually writing a five-page paper himself, so I’m not sure of his intentions. But, I can say with complete certainty that this paper is not only false, but most likely plagiarized.” Elliot couldn’t even fathom what this student was thinking, but at least he was able to help solve Richard’s mystery.

Richard's features where attentive to Elliot's as the man read the paper. Finally coming to a conclusion, Richard started laughing. He took the paper back from Elliot and pulled a red pen from his pocket and wrote a huge F across the page, circled it and wrote a note at the top. Thanks for rewriting the Lord of the Rings. Tears flowed down his cheeks with his laughter. "Thanks so much for the help." He slipped the pen back in his pocket, but didn't rise from his chair yet. [break][break]
"Do you happen to ride at one of the stables?" He asked curiously at the other teacher in front of him. Richard was always interested in riding but had never gotten really into it, maybe hanging around with Elliot would get him to do so.

You may say I'm a dreamerBut I'm not the only one✭✭ Richard’s response only made Elliot laugh harder. The whole situation was just so ridiculous. Eli couldn’t believe that a student had actually put that much effort into plagiarism. He couldn’t help but watch as Richard pulled out a red pen and marked the paper. His comment only made Eli laugh harder, snorting once as his shoulder began to shake with his laughter. In between chuckles, he replied, “Of course, anytime. Especially if your problems are this hilarious.”
It took a moment, but Elliot finally was able to stop laughing, although a smile of pure joy was still on his face. Richard’s next question took Eli off guard. He shouldn’t have surprised him, the academy was associated with several local stables, and many of the staff and students rode horses. Grinning, Eli told him, “I do! I board my horse Turbo at Polaris. What about you?” Now that the topic had been brought up, Elliot was curious. He would love to gain a friend he could ride with.
